Due to the thin air, cool weather and arid conditions at the top of the Haleakala Volcano, there is little vegetation near the summit. A few shrubs and plants do, however, manage to survive.

Many of the plants at the summit are indigenous to the mountain. They include the attractive Siversword plant.
