Due to its high altitude, dry air and isolation, Mount Haleakala is a popular location for both professional and amateur astronomers. In fact, it is said to be one of the top four places on earth to view deep space.

NASA and other agencies operate telescopes near the summit of the mountain in a facility called Science City. Science City lies above one-third of the earth's atmosphere.
Many visitors to Maui drive to the top of Mount Haleakala in the early morning hours to see the stars and watch the sunrise. Due to its high elevation, it is advisable to bring along a warm sweater or jacket, particularly in the early morning hours.
