Among the many hiking trails in Haleakala National Park is the Sliding Sands Trail that leads into the volcanic crater. Hikers will see a wide range of volcanic debris including iron deposits, indigenous plants and a rock formations along the trail.

Hikers should be careful to not over exert themselves on these trails as the air is noticeably thin at this 10,000 foot elevation. This becomes apparent when hiking uphill from the crater to the parking area.
