Silversword plants (called Ahinahina in Hawaiian) are the attractive metallic looking plants that grow on the Haleakala Volcano in Maui. These rare plants are are indigenous to this high altitude region.

The silver leaves serve as protection against the harsh rays of the sun. The air is quite thin at the top of the 10,000 foot volcano.
