One of the most fascinating things to see in the volcanic crater at the summit of Haleakala is an assortment of volcanic debris that has erupted from deep in the earth's core.

Significant deposits of rusting iron are visible in the volcanic material.  There is in fact so much iron in portions of the volcanic caldera that it actually affects a navigational compass.
